August 10, 1977 Berkowitz was caught because a woman saw a car being ticketed and the owner staring at her and holding “a dark object” in his hand so she ran home and heard shots and 4 days later calls police, who checked the cars that were ticketed on that street.
He had satanic graffiti in his apartment and maps of the crime scenes, bags of bullets, and a letter to police.
He was found guilty of murder in the second degree and attempted murder in the second degree with 25 years to life per crime, or 6 life sentences, at Attica Correctional Facility.
He went to several psychiatric wards before going to prison and switching to Sullivan Correctional Facility.
